It's Cocktail Saturday!
Which means we're not only going to enjoy a little libation - I have a few gossip related things to share - this time about Joe Bastianich.
I recently picked up his new tell all, Restaurant Man (an Anthony Bourdainesque memoir revealing the good, bad, and ugly truth about Joe's life as a restauranteur) and I haven't been able to put it down.
Not only does he give some really good dish, he's also apparently ticked more than a few people off.
But none quite so much as oft maligned Esquire food and wine writer John Mariani.
In the book, Bastianich recounts an experience early in his career when he served fish to Mariani. According to Joe, Mariani said it stunk so bad he wanted to vomit - spoken in the middle of a crowded restaurant with all eyes on him.
He also goes on to say a variety of other unflattering things about the critic including how pretentious and condescending he is - a sentiment that's been echoed by other food world heavy hitters, including Michael Ruhlman who divulged similar allegations in his book The Making of a Chef.
True to form, Mariani recently fired back in a letter to Page 6.
The letter, which alludes to a long and civilized relationship with the Bastianich family, calls Joe out as an insecure Anthony Bourdain "wanna be" with whom his mother, Lidia Bastianich, must be appalled. He also goes on to say that he will no longer dine in any of Joe's restaurants.
Though I wasn't crazy about some of the language Bastianich used in his book, based on Mariani's reputation alone, I have to believe there has to be some truth in what was written.
But go figure!
Who would have thought there was this much drama in the world of fine dining?
It's almost enough to make a gal want a cocktail - and have I got a treat for you tonight!
We're making an Espresso Bailey's Martini - which could very well be the most delicious cocktail you'll ever have!
