Grilled Bourbon and Onion Turkey Burgers

It's Weekday Wednesday again! The day I introduce easy and delicious week night meal, snack, and dessert ideas cooks at any level can accomplish.

Today's sweet and savoury grilled turkey burgers are infused with the flavours of bourbon, rich caramelized onion, and a hint of spices like cumin and oregano. Better still, they're not only easy and incredibly scrumptious, they're much lower in fat and calories than their traditional counterparts.

Make these ahead of time and throw them onto the barbie whenever you feel like eating.

Anyway you slice it, these burgers pack a burst of flavour in every bite! Proving once again, making magic in the kitchen is easier than you think.

Ingredients
  • 2 medium white onions sliced into thin rings
  • 1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
  • 1/4 tsp each cumin, salt, pepper, oregano
  • 1/4 cup bourbon
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 lb ground turkey thigh
  • 1 tbsp garlic powder
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire
  • 1/2 tsp each, salt and pepper
  • 4 thin slices Gruyere cheese
  • Arugula lettuce
Directions
  1. Saute the onions over medium heat (low and slow) until caramel and golden. About 30 minutes. Just as they begin to caramelize, add the cumin, salt, pepper and oregano.
  2. Add the bourbon and continue to saute until the onions get nice and syrupy looking and the bourbon just about evaporates. Stir in the brown sugar and set aside to cool. (This can be done earlier in the day)
  3. Add the garlic powder, Worcestershire sauce, salt and pepper to the ground turkey and mix well. Add the cooled onions, mix well, and form into four equal sized patties.
  4. Place onto an oil grill heated to medium and grill about 8 minutes per side until the turkey burgers reach an internal temperature of 165 degrees.
  5. Melt a thin slice of Gruyere cheese over top and serve on buns with arugula lettuce and the condiments of your choice.
